You are invited to participate in a research study exploring psychological factors that influence the decision to use herbal medicines. This is an area of interest as Australian’s are high users of herbal medicines, and little is known about the psychological factors involved in treatment decision-making related to herbal medicine use.
Who is conducting this study?
This study is being conducted by Ms Sarah Gooda, Ms Felicity Fox and Ms Felicity Boyd as one of the requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma of Psychology at Charles Sturt University (CSU). The project is being supervised by Dr Erica McIntyre, School of Psychology CSU.
Using herbal medicines? What influenced your decision to use them?
Eligibility for study
This study requires Australian residents aged 18 years and over, who are able to read and understand English, and who have used herbal medicines in the past 7 days.
Following this information page, you will be asked for basic demographic information, questions about your experience with the medicines you take, anxiety symptoms, beliefs and attitudes about complementary medicine and aspects of treatment decision-making, and questions related to personality.
How long will the questionnaire take?
The questionnaire is expected to take no longer than 30 minutes to complete. There is no payment or reward for participating in this study.
Confidentiality and volunteer information
Participation is entirely voluntary and confidential. Participation is anonymous and there is no way of identifying your data once it has been submitted. You will be free to withdraw from the study at any time by closing your browser window, up to the point that you submit your questionnaire. By completing and submitting your answers you will be giving consent for your answers to be used for research purposes.
Use of survey data
Following completion of the study, all raw data will be saved on password protected computers where it will be stored securely, and only the investigators named in this statement will have access to it. The information collected from the survey will be used within student dissertations, and may be included in academic publications or presented at conferences.
Risk to participant
There is negligible risk associated with this study. The survey is expected to be an enjoyable experience. This study contains questions about your psychological wellbeing. Should you in any way become distressed, you are encouraged to discontinue participating and, if you want to, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
