Information about the Survey

To members of the Australian mathematics education community, those interested in mathematics education, and those interested in education in general

You are invited to participate in the research project The Lexicon Project: Analysing pedagogical naming systems from different cultures to reconceptualise classroom practice and advance educational theory.

What is the project about?
The project is driven by the observation that our educational theories, research and descriptions of practice are expressed in English, which names some aspects of the classroom, but ignores key aspects named in other languages. This limits our capacity to access, connect and adapt the wisdom of other cultures. Funded by the Australian Research Council, this project is a collaboration between the Melbourne Graduate School of Education and eight additional teams internationally: Chile, China, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Japan and the USA.

The initial product of this research is a “National Lexicon” for each participating community, with each lexical term expressed in the original language, together with an English description, examples and non-examples.

In other words, we are documenting the terms that teachers use to describe the phenomena of the middle school mathematics classroom.

We are inviting you to complete this online survey in order to establish the familiarity and use that the Australian mathematics education community makes of the terms that currently make up the Australian Lexicon of teachers of mathematics. We are also interested in learning if the terms are used by or familiar to educators from other disciplines too.

This survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
