The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s Symbiosis in Aquatic Systems Initiative team would like to better understand the needs of the research community in developing model systems in aquatic symbiosis. We would appreciate responses to the following questions from all scientists interested in these model systems.

This survey is being circulated in connection with a solicitation for pre-applications for awards to develop freshwater and marine model systems where at least one symbiotic partner in the model system is a microbe (bacteria, archaea, or single-celled eukaryote, including single-celled fungi). The pre-application submission deadline is August 8, 2019 at 11:59 PM, Pacific Time. Please refer to the solicitation and a list of Frequently Asked Questions for more information. If you have a question not answered in these materials, please contact us at symbiosis@moore.org.

Our goal with these awards is to provide scientists (individuals or teams) with the tools and resources necessary to advance our mechanistic understanding of aquatic symbiotic interactions. We anticipate grantees will generate new tools, protocols, and resources to significantly improve the ability of scientists to observe and manipulate aquatic symbioses of interest.

· Responses to the questions below are required only from the application’s Principal Investigator (PI). The PI’s responses should correspond to the proposed effort and will be used in assessing the preapplication.

· If you are a co-investigator on an award application, you may fill out this survey separately and provide more general answers. These responses will not be connected to or used to evaluate your team’s preapplication.

· If you are not applying for this opportunity but would like to complete the survey to inform our initiative team, you may provide general answers below. We encourage you to share this survey with others in the research community who may also be able to help inform us about model system advances that will benefit aquatic symbiosis research.
