What is Student Minds?

Student Minds @ UNSW is a student volunteer program to promote peer to peer engagement to:

1. Increase understanding and knowledge of mental health amongst the student community

2. Help spread a positive attitude about mental health and skills that sustain a sense of wellbeing

3. Increase early help seeking behaviour amongst students experiencing psychological distress.

We organise student run events and campaigns around the campus throughout the year. It is student led, with sponsorship and training provided by UNSW Student Health and Wellbeing.

We collaborate with other areas across the university who have an interest in improving student wellbeing and building an understanding of psychological resilience as a graduate capability.

Benefits of joining Student Minds

Students who join the initiative will have access to a range of training workshops that provide a certificate of completion, and if you want to take advantage of the UNSW Advantage benefits. The training will offer a variety of options to suit the interests of Student Minds volunteers.

A selection of these workshops will be geared specifically towards mental health, including certified training in Mental Health First Aid. Other areas where workshops and training will be encouraged are: peer to peer communication and engagement and, understanding differences in cultural attitudes toward mental health and psychological literacy.

Other points of focus in the training will provide students with the opportunity to develop skills that will help them contribute to the volunteer program. All the skills developed during the training and the associated volunteering will prove advantageous in the world beyond UNSW.

Volunteering will give opportunities for leadership, teamwork, creative problem-solving, event planning and more. As part of UNSW Advantage, students who complete the required number of hours for training and volunteering across their study/degree will have their participation lodged for inclusion in their UNSW Advantage statement at graduation.
• Complete 10 hours of training and 10 hours volunteering (Volunteer)
