Smithsonian Early Childhood Nature-Based Learning Needs Assessment Survey

You are invited to complete this nationwide survey to help the Smithsonian understand the state of nature-based learning in early childhood classrooms across the country. Nature-based learning is an educational approach that uses natural environments and materials to center student learning across subjects. Nature-based learning can involve facilitated nature-based activities or unfacilitated nature play. Nature play is a specialized type of nature-based learning that prioritizes child-directed, hands-on activities and emphasizes authentic interaction with nature and/or natural materials.

Your responses will help guide the future development of classroom resources and professional development materials for early childhood educators. All perspectives and levels of experience are valuable. You do not need any prior experience using nature-based learning in the classroom or any prior knowledge of the Smithsonian to complete this survey.

This survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Your participation is voluntary, and you may discontinue the survey at any time. Your responses are confidential and will only be used for summarizing ideas. No identifying information will be shared with anyone at the Smithsonian.

As a token of appreciation for your time and feedback, you will receive a set of nature play teaching materials, only available to people who complete the survey.
