The Oklahoma Library Association Sequoyah Book Awards are the third oldest state book award in the country the first being April, 1959.

Commitments of the Sequoyah Reading Team:

  • Be an Oklahoma school or public librarian actively involved in the selection and/or purchase of materials appropriate to the age/grade requirements of the respective committees.

  • Required yearly membership with the Oklahoma Library Association.

  • A three-year commitment for all Reading Team members.

  • Read and evaluate as many books as possible from the consideration list. Consideration lists typically run up to 200 titles each year. Members are asked to read at least 80% of the list, an average of 2 books a week.

  • Required attendance at regularly scheduled (usually monthly) reading team meetings, a minimum of 12 days.

  • Required attendance at the spring OLA Annual Conference each year, a minimum of 1 day.

  • Required attendance at OTA/Encyclo-Media each year, a minimum of 1 day. Total attendance for all meetings and conferences is a minimum of 14 days per year.

  • Create a Masterlist annually.

  • Create a consideration list annually.

  • Write and present booktalks and reader's theaters at conferences.
