New Resource for San Diego Science Teachers

Ethics and Science Resource Survey

This survey is to assess what might be of use to you and your science teaching.

With the implementation of NGSS and its focus on scientific practices, it occurred to us that the free public programs of the San Diego Center for Ethics in Science and Technology could be useful to science teachers to use in the classroom. Please take just a moment to see examples of past programs (here) and/or see the brief description at the bottom of this page.

We need your help to determine what would be most useful!  We have just eleven quick questions.

Which if any of these possibilities (#1-9) seems both feasible and of use to you [Answers: Yes, Maybe, No]:
1.You might attend some of these programs to get ideas of things you could do in the classroom.(Required.)
2.Your students might attend some of these programs as part of a required or optional assignment.(Required.)
3.You or your students might access the existing online videos of full programs (1 hr) on topics of particular interest.(Required.)
4.You or your students might access online videos of programs (5-10 mins) on topics of particular interest.(Required.)
5.You could make use of general guidance in the form of a workshop for approaches to address ethical issues as part of a science curriculum.(Required.)
6.You could make use of general guidance posted online for approaches to address ethical issues as part of a science curriculum.(Required.)
7.You could make use of specific guidance for selected topics in the form of a workshop for approaches to address ethical issues as part of a science curriculum.(Required.)
8.You could make use of specific guidance for selected topics posted online for approaches to address ethical issues as part of a science curriculum.(Required.)
9.Overall, does something like the items noted above seem of interest and use to you as a teacher of science?(Required.)
10.Are there other formats or ideas that occur to you that might be more helpful/also helpful?
11.Are you interested enough that you might like to help in developing resources so they would be of benefit to other teachers? (e.g., reviewing proposed strategies, sharing your own lesson plans with others, etc.). If so, please provide your name and e-mail address:
*The Ethics Center has been convening free, public programs on exciting new developments in science and technology since 2004. These programs provide a variety of opportunities to overcome hurdles such as skepticism and distrust of science by stimulating conversations about ethical and social dimensions of research and its applications. Topics are wide-ranging: e.g., genetic modification of organisms, engineering the climate of the planet, artificial intelligence, e-cigarettes, the use of social media. The programs are typically presented at the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park and recorded by UCSD TV for broadcast and then posted online.
