Dr. Sabella will offer a presentation and take questions, in conversation with Julie Schumacher Cohen, University of Scranton Asst. Vice President for Community Engagement & Govt. Affairs and member of Churches for Middle East Peace’s Catholic Advisory Council and Fr. Michael Azar, University of Scranton Associate Professor of Theology and faculty leader of Christianity in the Middle East travel course.

About the Speaker: Born in Jerusalem in 1945, Dr. Sabella received his master's degree in Sociology in 1971 and his PhD in Sociology in 1981 from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville in the USA. Since then, he has been an Associate Professor of Sociology at Bethlehem University and during the period of 1995 to 2004 teaching Palestinian Society and Politics at Jerusalem University College. In 2006, he was elected as a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council. In addition, he is the Executive Director of the Department of Service to Palestinian Refugees at the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC). The multi-lingual Dr. Sabella is author of “A Life Worth Living: The Story of a Palestinian Catholic” and has published numerous articles and essays and his attendance at conferences, workshops and seminars is ongoing, especially at those events that address social, economic and political issues of relevance to the Middle East and its complexities. 
 
About Fr. Drew Christiansen, SJ: Fr. Drew was a Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Human Development at Georgetown University, a consultant to the Holy See and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, as well as a consultant to the Vatican’s Secretariat of State, and the Holy See Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations. He also served as Director of the U.S. Bishops’ Office of International Justice and Peace and was a former editor of America Magazine. Fr. Drew was a long supporter of CMEP and initiated the establishment of the Catholic Advisory Council (CAC) at Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP). Fr. Drew passed away in April 2022.

This lecture is hosted by The University of Scranton’s Office of Community Relations, Theology and Religious Studies Department, Political Science Department, Ellacuria Initiative and Peace and Justice Studies, together with the Churches for Middle East Peace Catholic Advisory Council.
