Course objectives
After completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
• Evaluate spinal patients
• Localise a spinal lesion
• Understand the differences between the upper motor neuron system and the lower motor neuron system
• Perform a neurological evaluation in a paretic dog or cat
• Establish a differential diagnosis list for a paretic dog or cat
• Recognise and know how to manage variety of painful and non-painful spinal conditions
• Be aware of the differential diagnoses for intermittent collapse in dogs
• Know the classification of epileptic seizures
• Obtain a good seizure history
• Establish a differential diagnosis list for seizures in dogs and cats
• Choose the appropriate diagnostic tests for a dog or cat with seizures
• Manage and treat a dog or cat with seizures
• Recognise an epileptic seizure in dogs and cats
• Evaluate a patient with suspected refractory epilepsy and know how to investigate it
• Know the emergency approach to a patient with status epilepticus
• Perform a neurological examination on a patient with suspected brain disease
• Recognise the clinical signs of vestibular disorders
• Localise the lesion in a vestibular disorder
• Establish a differential diagnosis list for vestibular disorders
• Recognise tremors in dogs and cats
• Establish a differential diagnosis list for generalised tremor syndromes
