PETITION TO OPPOSE REZONING FOR A ROCK QUARRY ON DENNIS STATION ROAD, PUTNAM COUNTY |
As shown in the aerial above, a massive granite quarry has been proposed between Eatonton and Lake Sinclair on Dennis Station Road. As agents for the landowner Weyerhaeuser, the mining company owners, who are located in Wisconsin and Tennessee, are requesting a zoning change from Agriculture to Industrial Manufacturing. We believe the proposed quarry will cause serious – and irreparable – harm to area residents and their homes, working farms, and really anyone with a stake in Putnam County. Let's save Putnam County for generations to come.
Please join with many of our neighbors in urging the Putnam County Commissioners to DENY the zoning change by adding your name to the Petition below. The 15 new jobs the quarry might create simply are not worth sacrificing our quality of life.
PETITION
We, the undersigned residents, property owners, and community members of Putnam County, formally oppose the proposed rezoning and development of a rock quarry on Dennis Station Road. This rezoning will fundamentally alter the character, safety, and environmental health of our community. Dennis Station Road and the surrounding areas are rural and residential in nature, and the introduction of an industrial-scale rock quarry is incompatible with current land use and community planning.
We raise the following concerns:

- Public Safety Risks: Increased heavy truck traffic on narrow rural roads will create significant dangers for residents, school buses, the motoring public, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles.
- Environmental Damage: Quarry operations will threaten groundwater, wells, streams, and local wildlife through blasting, dust, runoff, and potential contamination.
- Health Impacts: Dust, noise, and vibrations from blasting and crushing operations will pose serious risks to the health and well-being of nearby residents.
- Property Devaluation: Industrial quarry activity will negatively impact property values and homeowners’ ability to sell or enjoy their land.
- Quality of Life: Constant noise, heavy machinery operations, truck traffic, and blasting will permanently disrupt the peace, safety, and rural character of our community.
- Inappropriate Rezoning: Rezoning this area will set a dangerous precedent and undermine long-term land- use planning meant to protect residential and agricultural areas.
We respectfully request that the Putnam County Planning and Zoning Commission recommend denial of, and that the Putnam County Board of Commissioners deny, the rezoning request and any permits related to the rock quarry on Dennis Station Road. Our homes are not industrial zones. Our community is not for sale.
