Public Transport Consultation
The Council subsidises certain services which are not deemed “commercially viable”. This means services where the bus fares would not cover the costs of running the transport. In theses cases the Council steps in to support the services. Typically, these will be on Sundays or evenings, rural areas, early mornings or to schools where children are not entitled to free travel.
In these challenging financial times, we need to prioritise our spend and now seek your views, as to how we should do this. Our proposal is to target support to those services with a lower subsidy per passenger figure i.e. they are well used and cost less. * this is calculated by dividing the cost per annum by the number of passengers per annum.
We propose to rank our services “red, amber or green” based on subsidy per passenger
Services ranked “red” are those where subsidy per passenger exceeds £2 – these would be withdrawn
Services ranked “amber” are those where subsidy per passenger is between £1.00 and £1.99. these would be retained, but closely managed to try to improve performance through encouraging more people to use them.
Services ranked “green” are those where the subsidy per passenger is less than £1.00 per trip. These would be retained, as they are considered to be well used, relatively inexpensive, and therefore good value for money.
