At Penn State Mont Alto, academically gifted students have opportunities to enrich and broaden their education through two programs: the Penn State Mont Alto Honors Program and the Schreyer Scholars Program. Each program permits exceptionally talented students to go into greater depth in given subjects, doing not more work, but a different kind of work that is developed to stimulate intellectual curiosities.

Students enrolled in either of these programs may select from a variety of special Honors courses, or may create personalized versions of standard courses through Honors options. In addition, Honors students can pursue special interests through independent study or research courses. Students work closely with both an academic advisor and the Honors Coordinator to develop individualized academic plans.

This site has been developed to allow you to apply to the Honors Program at Penn State Mont Alto electronically. We highly recommend that you type your responses to the required questions PRIOR to completing this application and then simply paste your response on the appropriate screens that follow. You will not be able to save your work and return to the site later.

These are the questions that will require a response as part of this application:

  • A goal of the honors program is to "strive for academic excellence with integrity." Beyond the obvious consideration of not cheating, how might a concern for integrity apply to you and to the field of study you would like to enter?
  • According to the principles of the Schreyer’s Honors College, Honors students should "strive for leadership and civic engagement." This means that Honors students should strive to use their gifts of mind and intelligence not only to benefit themselves but also to contribute to society and to others. How might you use your personal abilities and strengths to make this happen in your academic career?
  • Which book, movie or other media message had the greatest influence in your life during the past year? What was it and how has it changed you?
  • Please provide us with a list of your extracurricular activities from and honors received. We encourage you to also share with us any community awards or memberships in civic organizations such as scouting, 4-H, etc. Please also list any current employment or volunteer positions you have at this time.
