This 3-day training offers a powerful immersion into the practice of ISTDP. We will be thinking deeply together about how to intervene in very specific and common scenarios that therapists frequently face in session. After exploring each new concept, we will practice and try on a new stance with specific interventions. This experiential training will leave you with not only a new understanding but with experience intervening in ways that will change your practice and generate personal growth.
In day 1, we explore the metapsychology of the unconscious and how to use this to develop an effective focus for treatment.
In day 2, we learn to recognize the three patterns of anxiety discharge in video examples. Practice exercises and review of client video provide an opportunity to learn to assess and regulate unconscious anxiety.
In day 3, we review defense mechanisms and how avoidance of painful material contributes to mental health issues. Participants will practice helping clients recognize and turn against their defenses and toward healthy functioning by working with real case examples.
This is not required to enroll in Core Training. The next scheduled Pre-Core Training is February 20-22nd, 9am-5pm EST each day. You may join over Zoom or in East Lansing, Michigan.
