This summer, the City replaced the play equipment at Peacock Gap Park. Historically, the tot playground at Peacock Gap Park has had a perimeter fence, while the 5+ playground has not. As part of this project, the City installed a new fence around the tot lot but not the older kids play area, matching the historical condition.
Since the new playground has reopened, some community members have voiced concern that the lack of fence around the older kids play area may result in conflicts with other park user groups. A particular concern that has been shared is kids coming into contact with dog poop in the play area. After receiving the complaint, staff followed up with visits to the park and confirmed regular presence of dogs in the play area.
Additionally, staff have met with fencing contractors and determined that it would be possible to install a fence that matches the park aesthetic and is within the project budget.
While the proposed fence may address some of the concerns, the fencing will also restrict access in and out of the play area to one entryway. Before proceeding with installing a fence around the older kids play area, the City wants to gauge community support.
