Title: Initial Validation of the Acceptance & Action Questionnaire for Parents of Children on the Autism Spectrum (AAQ-PoCAS).
Investigator: John T. Blackledge, Ph. D
The purpose of this study is to develop a questionnaire useful in determining (1) to what degree different parents/guardians of children on the autism spectrum try to avoid distressing parenting experiences; and (2) to what degree different parents/guardians of children on the autism spectrum persist in personally meaningful parenting activities even when distress arises. If you choose to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete several short questionnaires online, and then complete one of these questionnaires online again in one week. The questionnaires include questions that ask you to rate the accuracy of statements like “Other people’s opinions about my child matter to me”, “It’s OK to feel angry, guilty, frustrated”, and “I am very clear about what matters most to me in multiple areas of my life”.
Through your participation in this study you will be contributing to a better scientific understanding of the difficulties faced by parents/caregivers of children on the autism spectrum, and how different parent of children on the autism spectrum respond to the difficult emotions and thoughts that arise while raising their children. Ultimately, the questionnaire being investigated in this experiment will help psychologists craft increasingly effective ways of helping parents of autism spectrum children effectively cope with parenting stress.
You will not be identifiable in any publications or presentations resulting from this study. Names will not be recorded on questionnaires or attached to your computer data. While you will be asked to enter an email address so that the server you are completing the survey on can automatically email you in one week asking you to complete another short survey of 25 questions, your email address will not be attached to any of the answers your provide in either survey and we will not email you for any other purpose. Rather, your data will only be identified by a numerical code that is never matched up to your name or email address.
You may elect to withdraw from this study at any time, without any penalty. If you choose to withdraw from the study before its completion, all data we have collected from you will be destroyed. We do not anticipate that you will experience any significant or lasting distress as a result of this experiment. However, just in case you do and wish to discuss this with a qualified psychologist, the contact information for this study’s Principal Investigator (a clinical psychologist) is listed below.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns before or after the completion of the experiment, please feel free to contact the Principal Investigator for the study, Dr. J. T. Blackledge, at 606-783-2982. If you have any complaints regarding the manner in which this study has been conducted, you may contact the Morehead State University Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects at 606-783-9370.
