Orange Literacy provides a variety of educational services to adults, including reading and writing instruction, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), preparation for applying for U.S. citizenship, GED preparation and math instruction. None of this would be possible without the tremendous help of volunteers like you! Volunteers also assist us with reception and intake in our office and with writing and discussion workshops at the local men's and women's shelters.

We provide an initial orientation and training as well as continued support, materials and guidance for all of our volunteers. No prior teaching experience is required to volunteer with Orange Literacy, nor is fluency in a language other than English. You do need to have good reading and communication skills, however. Most of all, you should enjoy working with and encouraging people in your community!

Building literacy skills requires long term dedication from our adult learners as well as our volunteers. In order to build the mutual trust necessary to maximize our learners' potential, we ask that ABE and ESOL tutors commit to tutoring for at least 6 months. ABE and ESOL tutors typically meet with their student or small group twice a week for 1.5 hours at a time.

More information on the time commitment necessary for each volunteer opportunity is below. Note that these projections include preparation and travel time.
  • ABE (one-on-one) tutor: 4-6 hours per week for at least 6 months
  • ESOL (small group) tutor: 4-6 hours per week for at least 6 months
  • Citizenship (one-on-one) tutor: 1.5-3 hours per week for up to 6 months
  • Reception/intake volunteer: 2-4 hours per week, as available
  • Shelter volunteer: 1-2 hours per week, as available
Occasional absences due to travel or illness are expected.
