1. Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the NYU LGBTQ Student Center's Safe Zone Training Program.

Safe Zone is a campus wide program designed to raise visibility about the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) population, understand some of the issues facing LGBTQ individuals, and become aware of the various LGBTQ resources.

We're happy to offer these Safe Zone trainings this semester:

Safe Zone I:
Friday, September 26th | 12:00pm - 3:00pm
Friday, October 10th | 12:00pm - 3:00pm
Friday, November 14th | 12:00pm - 3:00pm

This three hour training session provides a foundation of knowledge needed to be an effective ally to LGBTQ students. Individuals who complete this training and then choose to post a Safe Zone card should be comfortable with LGBTQ students approaching them to talk about LGBTQ related issues, or to help students find campus or local resources.

Safe Zone II "Dismantling Heterosexism & Institutional Oppression":

Friday, December 5th | 12:00pm - 3:00pm

Heterosexism is a term that applies to attitudes, bias and discrimination in favor of opposite-sex sexuality and relationships. It includes the presumption that everyone is heterosexual or that opposite-sex attractions and relationships are the norm and therefore superior. It is the belief that everyone is or should be straight.

The NYU LGBTQ Student Center has developed a training that builds on concepts covered in Safe Zone I. The Dismantling Heterosexism and Institutional Oppression training module provides concrete examples of heterosexism; identifies how it manifests on individual, cultural and institutional levels; and provides participants with tools and strategies for challenging heterosexist practices and behaviors on all of these levels. **This training is open to all students and staff that have completed a Safe Zone I training within the last TWO years.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming Safe Zone I or Safe Zone II trainings! You will receive confirmation of your registration or notification you've been put on the waitlist 1-2 weeks prior to the training you signed up for. If you have questions regarding the registration form or the Safe Zone program, please do not hesitate to contact us at lgbtq.student.center@nyu.edu or at 212.998.4424.
