Steps for Conducting a Visual Waste Audit
Steps for Conducting a Visual Waste Audit

Follow the steps below to complete the visual waste audit if you are a business, school, commercial or government organization.

Step 1. Empty all of your bins e.g. garbage, mixed & depot recycling and compost, on your regular collection day. Take bins for refundables, glass, etc., to the depot so you’re starting fresh.

For commercial entities that use shared dumpsters, measure your waste before emptying it into the dumpsters. Feel free to use a timeframe that reflects your waste frequency.

Note: If you have not completed the above steps, do not proceed with filling out this form and come back to it once you have.

Step 3. Determine the size of your bins. You can usually locate the size inscribed on the side or the bottom of the bins. For an infographic displaying the most common bin sizes, please refer to Measure Your Waste section on the website. Record this value in the box below.

Question Title

Garbage bin volume (Liter/L)

Step 4. Visually estimate how full each bin is (e.g., 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%). Record this value below.
Step 5. To calculate the volume of waste in each bin, multiply the bin size by how full it is, in terms of percentage. For example, a 60 L bin was about half (50%) full when emptied, then there is 30 L (60 L x 0.5 = 30L) of waste in it. Record this value below.

Question Title

Total quantity of garbage (L)

Step 6. If you wish, you may conduct a similar audit on more than one kind of waste stream, (e.g. mixed recycling, depot recycling, and compost). Follow steps 1-5 and record your values under each waste stream in the sections below.
