New Mexico Business Coalition (NMBC) values your partnership in our mission. Each year, we evaluate our positions & priorities to ensure they reflect our members’ values and those issues they find most critical in our state. We know this is a busy season, but we respectfully ask for a few moments of your time. Your feedback will help shape our Legislative and Policy priorities for 2026.

What happens with your input? Once finalized, NMBC will publish our Legislative and Policy Positions and share them with legislators and elected officials. This ensures they understand where NMBC and our members stand on creating a stronger business environment for New Mexico. The final NMBC Legislative and Policy Positions will also serve as the basis for scoring legislators on a scale of A to F based on their voting records. Those scorecards will be provided to voters to help them make informed decisions at the polls.

Current policy position on Public Safety: New Mexico needs to end catch and release policies for repeat offenders (bail reform), stop providing sanctuary to those living here illegally who commit crimes, reinstate liability protections for police (qualified immunity), and enforce the laws already on the books.

* 4. Current policy position on Taxes: Replace the Gross Receipts Tax with a simple sales tax; limit special interest tax breaks while making military retirement income and social security income tax-free. Return any 'tax surplus' to taxpayers and stop expanding government spending.

* 5. Current policy position on Employment Laws: Stop government-mandated wages and benefits which drive up costs, cause businesses to close, limit work hours and reduce job opportunities. The proposed 'Paid Family Medical Leave' laws (in addition to the 8 days of paid time for health issues per employee per year already in place) would cause many more small businesses to close or downsize available jobs.

Focus on English, math, and reading proficiency with robust vocational/job skills classes for Junior High & High School students.

* 7. Current policy position on State Budget: New Mexico's budget should be based on steady, recurring revenue and expenses, not temporary surpluses or one-time funding sources. Infrastructure funding should be distributed fairly based on each county’s economic activity and tax contributions. School funding should prioritize student outcomes over administration.

Current policy position on Economic Development: Focus economic incentives on creating and keeping private sector jobs in New Mexico, benefiting local businesses instead of out-of-state companies. Tax funded incentives should include strict accountability with defined metrics and repayment penalties if requirements are not met.

* 9. Current policy position on Energy: Energy policies should balance environmental stewardship with realistic and affordable energy needs. Support of fossil fuel energy produced in New Mexico that funds the state budget, schools, jobs, and more must be maintained.
