Ofsted rates Croydon's social services as 'inadequate' - we call for fresh leadership immediately

On Monday 4th September Ofsted released a report on its findings after a full inspection of Children’s Social Care services at Croydon Council

The service has been rated as inadequate across the board.

Social services look after Croydon's most vulnerable children and young people. It's there to support them in times of unimaginable difficulty. That Croydon has failed it's most basic duty to its citizens is unforgivable.

You can read more about the shocking report here:
When it was last reviewed in 2012 social services was rated as 'Adequate' and 'Good' and improving. The report notes that the service has declined substantially since the last inspection.

It is the first time that Croydon has ever failed an inspection and the report is worse than the widely-publicised report on performance in Birmingham 18 months ago. It is the most damning report Croydon has ever seen.

Nowhere in the report does it say the council is under-resourcing the service, but everywhere it criticises the management, oversight and leadership of this vital area.

The Ofsted report notes that the leadership was unaware of how poor the service had become. This is a damning condemnation of the performance of the Leader of the Council, Cllr Tony Newman, and the person in charge of children's services, Cllr Alisa Fleming, both of whom should have known and been actively leading service improvement. The current administration took control in 2014, so it is evident that there has been a total collapse under this administration caused by its own incompetence.

We see no other alternative than to demand fresh leadership from those elected to run our Town Hall for us. Cllr Tony Newman is the Leader of the Council. Cllr Alisa Flemming's sole responsibility is the running of children's services. They have dropped the ball in a way that Ofsted believes is putting our most vulnerable residents in danger.

Please sign our petition to call for their resignation and share it with all who might be interested. We believe that only with fresh leadership can this horrific situation be speedily rectified.
Ofsted has published a shocking report that found Croydon Council's social services to be inadequate across the board. As a result, our most vulnerable children and young people are at risk. Ofsted explicitly states that it is a direct result of a failure of management, leadership and oversight.

We, the undersigned, therefore call for the immediate resignation of both Cllr Tony Newman (Leader of Croydon Council) and Cllr Alisa Flemming (Cabinet Member for Children, Young People & Learning) to enable the fresh leadership needed to rectify this deeply sad situation.
