Welcome

This survey provides an opportunity for residents to comment on the VPACH (Virgin Media Park and Charge) proposal for the introduction of Electric Vehicle Charging Points and associated Electric Vehicle Charging Only Bays for residential on-street parking in Northamptonshire.

The closing date for the survey is: 24 Feb 2020

Further information surrounding the VPACH project can be found here.

Following this initial consultation selected sites will be shortlisted and taken forward to the next stage. Details of the next steps are outlined later in this survey.  Residents will get another opportunity to formally comment on the designation and operation of the bays next to the proposed charge points at a later stage.

Background

Public charging point availability is currently very low in Northamptonshire.  This presents a barrier to the uptake of ultra-low emission (‘plug-in’) vehicles (ULEVs).  Northamptonshire County Council is keen to address this and increase the supply of electric vehicle charging points to meet growing demand from residents, support the adoption of low emission electric vehicles and help adopt more sustainable travel and improve air quality.

One of the ways in which the Council is addressing this growing demand is through involvement in the VPACH project.  This is an INNOVATE UK sponsored project which aims to accelerate the installation of electric vehicle charge points.

At the heart of the VPACH project are a group of Local Authorities committed to working in partnership with the other project partners like Virgin Media (connectivity provider) and Vattenfall (charge point operator) to help roll out on-street electric vehicle charging across the country, and provide affordable charging facilities for residential locations with low rates of off-street parking.  Vattenfall charge points use 100% green electricity.

How we chose the locations

When looking for potential locations for electric vehicle charging points, Virgin Media and Vattenfall consider a number of different criteria. Various technical aspects are taken into consideration to ensure the safety of users.  For this reason, it is not always possible to install charge points in certain locations:
  • Electric Vehicle registrations in the local area;
  • Resident requests for electric vehicle charging points;
  • Predicted future update data;
  • Access to off-street charging;
  • Areas close to high streets and local amenities;
  • Away from live equipment e.g. lamp posts (at least 2.5m);
  • Away from the front of residential homes;
  • Areas where there is a good pavement width to allow for charge points and pedestrians;
  • Areas with existing power and  connectivity.
Proposed Sites

We are proposing to introduce one charge point, with the capability to charge two Electric Vehicles. It is also the intention that Electric Vehicle charging bays will be implemented next to charge points for the sole use of Electric Vehicles while they are charging.

Maps detailing the exact location of the proposed sites can be found by clicking the locations below:

Corby
Desborough
Earls Barton
Click on the road name below to see an image of the proposed parking bay location illustrating the exact site marked in orange as well as an aerial google map of the site.

Please note that whilst four bays have been highlighted within the images below, at this stage it is the intention that only two electric vehicle charging bays will be implemented next to charge points for the sole use of electric vehicles while they are charging. Where there are two sites per location (Bath Road and Ardington Road) only one site will be taken forward to the next stage.
