A woman’s medical provider has the biggest influence on initiation and duration of breastfeeding and research has demonstrated that health care provider ambivalence toward breastfeeding can have a negative impact on breastfeeding decisions. Studies show that when women receive positive prenatal support from their providers, they are less likely to discontinue breastfeeding at both six weeks and 12 weeks after birth.
