The Government has commissioned the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to carry out a full review of the Shortage Occupation list. The SOL contains job titles which are difficult to fill in the UK, where it would be sensible to fill through non-EEA migration.


As jobs on this list are recognised as being in shortage, they do not need to undertake certain visa requirements such as the Resident Labour Market Test or meet the five-year salary threshold. This saves a lot of time and money; for example, the Resident Labour Market Test would require you to advertise the job position in the UK for at least 28 days first before hiring a worker from abroad and the current salary threshold is £30,000. If there is an occupation you are hiring for which you know cannot be filled by a UK national, having the job title on this list means you can skip the 28 advertisement and hire the appropriate person faster.

A call for evidence on updating the list is now open, and we urge you to get involved on this very important consultation. Access to talent is consistently the biggest challenge you have reported to us in the past, with our State of Play report finding that 61% of games business employed non-UK nationals.
