E-Consent Form

Purpose: You are invited to participate in a research study assessing the role of media on participation in citizen science projects conducted by Science Friday Initiative (SciFri). Citizen science or crowdsourcing science is when members of the public help support scientific research. This can include activities such as recording observations in nature, tracking flu symptoms, and contributing data to a national inventory of water pipe materials. We plan to ask about 1,200 adults aged 18+ across the US to take part in this study. We are looking for people who have and have not volunteered for citizen science so that we can learn more about their interests.

Procedures: The procedure involves completing an online survey that will ask you questions about your demographics, experience with news media, perceptions of media and citizen science projects, experiences with citizen science (if any), science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) interests/values, and behavior. The survey will take about 15-30 minutes.

A subset of 25 survey respondents who are interested will be selected to participate in the semi-structured interview. Individuals selected for the interview will be chosen randomly. If you join us for this portion of the study we will ask you questions about STEM interest/values, exposure to news media media, media interests, inclusivity of media and citizen science projects, and barriers to participating in citizen science projects. The interview will take about 45-60 minutes.

You may agree to the survey without agreeing to participate in the interview. However, only those who consent for the survey will be eligible for the interview.

Risks: The risks in being in this study are small. There is a risk that the survey or interview technology will not function as anticipated. You may feel uncomfortable about some of the questions we will ask. You can refuse to answer any question. You may refuse to answer any question that makes you feel uncomfortable. We will do everything we can to keep your information private. There is no cost to you for being part of the survey.

Benefits: The study may not have any direct benefits for you. The information you provide will be used to understand the role of media in science interest. Your responses will help us develop more effective programs to encourage participation in citizen science projects and improve the experience for citizen science participants.

Compensation for Participation: If you agree to take part in this study, you will be entered into a lottery for a $50 e-gift card for your efforts in completing the survey. Lottery drawings will be conducted once every other month. We will notify you if you have won the e-gift card at the time of lottery drawing. A random subset of survey respondents will be selected for the semi-structured interview. If you have been chosen to complete the interview you will be compensated with a $50 e-gift card for your efforts. You will need to complete the survey and/or interview to receive the applicable compensation. Compensation will not be provided to participants who fail to complete applicable study activities after consent is provided.

Voluntary Nature of Participation: Your participation in this research study is voluntary. You do not have to participate. If you decide to participate in this research study, you may withdraw at any time. There will be no penalty or loss of benefits to you if you decide not to be in the study or to withdraw from the study.
