The Town of Wayland is negotiating a renewal of its cable licensing agreement with Comcast Corporation (Xfinity). Your participation in this survey will help the Town as it negotiates a new cable licensing agreement directly based on our community's cable-related needs.

Why does Wayland need a public access station?

Through the Town of Wayland’s negotiation with cable service companies, WayCAM provides three local channels. WayCAM is Wayland’s award-winning Public Access Station, an independent non-profit corporation (i.e., not part of Wayland town government). It has its own Board of Directors and it is funded through fees from cable subscribers, not town taxes.

WayCAM and its staff have a reputation of providing excellent cable access services since 1985. Over the past decade, WayCAM has expanded delivery of original programming for all three sectors of its audience (public, education, and government). Renewed funding is necessary to continue and build on this success.

Infrastructure:
  • WayCAM’s studio is adjacent to Wayland High School and has four employees.
  • In 2011, WayCAM built a new studio, bringing in many new community and student volunteers. As a result, WayCAM has increased programming and community value by making forward-thinking decisions and investments over the past ten years.
  • WayCAM has also built 15 high-definition satellite studios, all of which are capable of live broadcasting.
Programming:
  • WayCAM nearly doubled its programming in the past nine years from 469 programs in 2010 to 898 programs in 2019.
  • WayCAM runs robust school programs with four high school classes and over 50 students in the studio daily, as well as middle school and elementary student programs. WayCAM students have received numerous national creativity awards, with many alumni going into careers in TV, film, and video.
