Kodiaks Athletics - 2016 Kodi's Awards Voting Process: PLEASE read and consider the body of work for each nominee before voting. Definition of the 3 Pillars - Academic Accountability - are academics a priority and are they a good student athlete/team; Athletic Excellence - what kind of season did they have and what kind of a leader(s) on and off the court; Student Athlete Experience - are they involved outside of athletics - community service, etc. throughout the school year. Only one ballot per voter, verified by email. Truly look at the entire season and what each nominee has done or accomplished. All nominees were chosen by the coaching staff's and Athletics department. Submissions close Wednesday, April 6th. Outstanding Team Award Question Title * 1. Which team best exemplifies Kodiaks Athletics 3 Pillars of Academic Accountability, Athletic Excellence & Student Athlete Experience Women's Soccer - moved up to 2nd place in ACAC standings and earned their 2nd consecutive trip to ACAC championships. Men's Soccer - went from last to first in one season. Lost to undefeated Keyano in the Gold medal match at ACAC's. Men's Volleyball - qualified to their 2nd consecutive championships and under the direction of a new head coach. Also committed to being involved in the community, sponsoring a couple of different initiatives. Women's Volleyball - earned the departments highest team GPA and were involved on a couple of community events throughout the season. Men's & Women's Cross Country - earned ACAC team gold medals, CCAA bronze medals, team supremacy recognition at both ACAC and CCAA championships, hosted 3 events including ACAC XC championships, had the highest combined team GPA's and were involved in several community events throughout the season including the 43rd 10-4 Road Race. Men's & Women's Indoor Track - earned ACAC team Silver medals, a combined team GPA above a 3.0 and were involved in several community events throughout the season. Men's Basketball - earned a 2nd consecutive trip to ACAC championships, most improved team GPA from the previous season and were involved in several different community and college initiatives throughout the season. Women's Basketball - held the nation's no#1 ranking for 16 straight weeks, earned ACAC bronze medals and held several community and college events throughout the season. Tim Tollestrup Leadership/Athlete of the Year Award Question Title * 2. The complete male student athlete that excelled at the 3 Pillars of Kodiaks Athletics -honouring that Kodiak that best represents Academic Accountability, Athletic Excellence & the Student Athlete Experience. Chaz Johnson - Men's Basketball - earned 1st team ACAC All conference honors for the 2nd straight year, GPA above a 3.0 was the team leader both off and on the court and represented the team at several community events throughout the year. Alex Harding - Men's Cross Country - earned individual and team ACAC Gold Medals, CCAA team silver medalists, finished 6th overall and earned CCAA All Canadian honors, has a GPA above a 3.0 and has been very committed to community events throughout the year. Nils Neger - Men's Volleyball - men's team captain and helped lead the new look kodiaks to their 2nd consecutive ACAC championships, a perfect GPA in the Fall 2015 semester, and took the lead in coordinating several community events. Nico Pasquotti - Men's Soccer - earned ACAC 1st team All conference honors, ACAC player of the year award, CCAA Player of the year honors, team earned ACAC silver medal, CCAA's top goal scorer for the year, helped out with several different soccer community involvement activities and had a solid GPA in a tough pre-engineering program. The complete female student athlete that excelled at the 3 Pillars of Kodiaks Athletics -honouring that Kodiak that best represents Academic Accountability, Athletic Excellence & the Student Athlete Experience. Rachel McKenzie - Women's Cross Country & Indoor Track - multisport student athlete, helped lead the XC team to an ACAC gold medal, CCAA Bronze medal for XC, ACAC indoor team Silver medal, two team supremacy recognitions, 3 individual event medals at Indoor championships, one of the team captains as a 3rd year athlete, heavily involved in helping with all the team's community events and has a cumulative GPA over 3.5 in the nursing program. Emily Godfrey - Women's Soccer - helped take the kodiaks to their 2 consecutive ACAC championships allowing only 4 goals for the season as the starting goaltender, extremely active with both community and college events and organizations, and is an above 3.5 GPA student athlete. Sunder West - Women's Basketball - helped lead the team to a 22-1 record, earned the ACAC bronze team medal, ACAC south All conference team honors, lead several categories in ACAC stats, regularly involved in team community events and was above a 3.0 GPA in the Fall 2015 semester. Brooke French - Women's Volleyball - team leader both on and off the court in her second year with the kodiaks, her consistent play kept the kodiaks in a lot of matches in 15-16, involved heavily in the volleyball teams community activities and is an above 3.0 GPA student athlete. Kodiaks Coach of the Year Question Title * 4. The Kodiaks coach that used the 3 Pillars to build, guide and commit to their teams success both on and off the court/field Michael Racz - Men's & Women's Soccer - in his first year of head coaching both programs, Coach Racz lead the women back to their 2nd consecutive ACAC championships & took the men's team from last to first in the ACAC south. Bertil Johansson - Cross Country/Indoor Track - in his 29th season, Coach Johansson claimed ACAC Gold in both men's & women's cross country and went on to earn CCAA team Bronze for both teams. Both teams also claimed the overall team supremacy recognition at the ACAC & CCAA championships. Also ACAC Silver medalists for both teams at Indoor. Dusty Stauth - Women's Volleyball - in his final season Coach Stauth started off strong and established a strong base of returning student athletes to compete in the years to come. Mike Hawkins - Men's Volleyball - in his first season as a head coach, Coach Hawkins lead the team back to its second consecutive ACAC championships with a young team. Ryan Heggie - Men's Basketball - lead the new look Kodiaks to their 2nd consecutive ACAC championships with a strong 2nd half of the season & earned the ACAC South Coach of the year honors & was nominated for the CCAA Coach of the year. Brad Karren - Women's Basketball - Coach Karren lead the Kodiaks to a 22-1 season and an ACAC bronze medal maintaining the nation's no#1 ranking for 16 straight weeks. Best Championships Performance by a Team Question Title * 5. A performance that defied the odds, separated our team from the rest and will not be forgotten. Men's Cross Country at ACAC Championships - earning the individual Gold and Bronze medals the team rallied around those performances to secure the Team ACAC Gold medal and proceeded to earn a team Bronze at CCAA National championships 2 weeks later. Women's Basketball at ACAC Championships - after suffering its only loss in the semi-final, the women showed their fight and battled the host & only other undefeated team in the nation until the semi-finals and cruised to an easy win earning the ACAC Bronze medal. Men's Soccer at ACAC Championships - coming from worst to first the previous season, the Kodiaks took on north powerhouse, NAIT, in the semi-final and absolutely put it to the Ooks, beating them 4-1 setting up a Gold medal match against the nation's no#1 team - Keyano huskies for the ACAC Gold and trip to nationals. Best Upset Award Question Title * 6. A game or performance when the Kodiaks earned a win that seemed almost impossible to pull off. Men's Basketball vs. SAIT, Feb. 19 - fighting for their ACAC championships appearance lives, the kodiaks fought to the end and beat SAIT to keep the championships berth alive and knock SAIT out of the championships picture. Men's Volleyball vs. Red Deer College - the Kodiaks men handed the nations no#1 team their only loss in 2015-16. Down 0-2 the Kodiaks fought back to earn the win 15-12 in the 5th set. Women's Basketball vs. Lower Columbian at exhibition tournament in the states. Battling against one of the NJCAA's top ten teams the kodiaks women handed them an unexpected loss at the tournament. Evan Brown - Men's Indoor track - Evan ran past several experienced runners in the 600M to earn an individual ACAC silver Women's Volleyball vs Ambrose, home opener. Ambrose came into the season ranked 3 spots higher than the last ranked Kodiaks and the women pulled off the upset. Best Comeback of the Year Award Question Title * 7. Down but not out - that Kodiaks comeback win that showed what kind of "never say never" attitude of a true Kodiaks team! Emily Lucas - Women's Cross Country - suffering a severe hip injury prior to the ACAC Championships, Emily aggressively rehabbed and was cleared just 2 days before championships. She went into championships earning a Bronze medal and helped her team to the team Gold. Men's Volleyball - down 0-2 in sets to the undefeated and No#1 in the nation Red Deer College Kings - the men fought back to tie the Kings and then upset them for their only loss in 2015-16. Men's Soccer vs. SAIT, Oct. 18 - down 2-1 at SAIT who was in 1st place in the south - the Kodiaks battled back scoring two which helped the kodiaks clinch first place. Question Title * 8.
