Spaces affect how we feel and behave. Research indicates that certain kinds of spaces help us focus on studying more than other spaces. Between Spring 2015 and Spring 2016 we asked you for ideas about how to improve Jefferson College Library space and services and make them better for learning--we have received almost 600 suggestions! We listened and have tried to incorporate as many as possible into what will be our newly remodeled Library (Coming 2018). There were several things that came up over and over again, like quiet space, outlets, and eating.Take a moment to look at some information and images about the project and let us know what you think.

* 1. Improved quiet study space has been a request from students for years. Our new space will incorporate small, quiet study rooms, a second floor quiet area that is separated from adjacent noisier spaces, and a click-free zone for those who like an ultra-quiet atmosphere. How well do you think these ideas meet the need for improved and more numerous quiet study spaces?

Better than I could have imagined!

Very well, something for many levels of quiet study needs.

I like a noisier study atmosphere, but this seems great for those who like quiet.

There's never enough quiet study space--make the entire campus quiet!

* 2. Lots of Library visitors have asked us to create a space where they can have something to eat without leaving the library. The new space will have some designated areas for eating snacks or simple, not-too-messy or strong-smelling food. How important is being able to eat in the library to you?

Very important, so happy about this change.

Somewhat important, I'd like to eat a snack while studying to fuel my brain.

Optional--that's fine, but I don't feel strongly about it.

That's okay, as long as it doesn't lead to a messy study space.

Gross, I wish people wouldn't eat in the library.

* 3. Students have asked for more access to computers, outlets, and device charging stations. The new Jefferson College Library space will have at least as many desktop computers, as well as additional outlets to charge phones and other devices. Check as many of the options listed below that you would typically expect to do in a new library.

Use a fast, reliable desktop computer to complete coursework.

Check-out laptops for use in the library.

Have access to plenty of receptacles for charging my many devices.

Use my own laptop or device on a fast campus wireless system.

Print my homework and papers from my laptop.

* 4. Working with a group from class on a presentation, studying with friends, or meeting with a peer tutor or study buddy require different kinds of spaces. The first floor of our library will have a variety of collaborative study areas. Which of the following spaces do you like to use? Check all that apply.

A table for two--I usually like to study with just one other person or a peer tutor. I want space, but not necessarily lots of distractions.

A big table in the middle of the first floor for a study group to all sit around and chat, eat, and help each other. Whiteboards and a monitor would be a bonus. I like studying with lots of other students who are also studying, but I don't like a really quiet space.

A study room that accommodates a small group working on a class presentation.

Study rooms with a computer, large format screen, and whiteboards or writable walls would be wonderful.

* 5. Between a study carrel in the quiet zone and a chatty class project group there are lots of ways to study. Which of these spaces is it important to have in our new Library? You may pick more than one.

A cozy chair in the corner with a little table and a lamp.

A sort of quiet computer room where some talking is okay, but big group noise is not.

Comfortable furniture where I can sit with my friends, have plenty of room for books, computers, and papers, and talk a little bit.

A space where presentations can be practiced, recorded, and watched.

A seat next to a window, I like lots of natural light.
