In 2016, the San Francisco Arts Commission removed an outdoor kinetic sculpture from Palega Recreation Center due to mechanical failure. As a replacement for the damaged artwork, the Arts Commission is considering relocating Invocation, a sculpture by Pepe Ozan, to the park.
In 2004 Pepe Ozan (1939-2013) was commissioned to create Invocation for the Cesar Chavez Boulevard bicycle infrastructure project. The sculpture depicts a Mesoamerican Eagle Warrior and honors indigenous heritage and cultures. It is made of painted steel and stands ten feet tall with a wingspan of eight feet.
If Invocation is relocated to Palega Recreation Center, it will be professionally restored and repainted and will be placed on a new concrete pedestal north of the recreation center building along the path connecting the Silliman Street and Felton Street entrances.
