We are requesting your assistance with a community consultation survey about developing an Indigenous Peoples Court within Simcoe County. Before agreeing to participating in the survey, please carefully read this letter in order to understand your part as well as be able to ask any questions about the community consultation survey.
The purpose of this community consultation survey is to have community feedback that will be used in the development of an Indigenous Peoples Court within Simcoe County. This knowledge will assist the Indigenous Peoples Court Committee consisting of Enaahtig Healing Lodge, Barrie Native Friendship Centre, Georgian Bay Métis Council and Biidaaban Restorative Justice and Community Healing Model (Rama First Nation) in developing an Indigenous Peoples Court that will benefit any Indigenous persons going through the Criminal Court process within Simcoe County.
You will be asked a total of 5 questions concerning the overall development of an Indigenous Peoples Court. By participating in this community consultation survey, you will contribute to the development of an Indigenous Peoples Court for Simcoe County. Risks to participating in this community consultation survey include the possibility of being triggered from your life experiences. If you experience any feelings of stress, anxiety, grief, worry, anger or suicide, please contact Simcoe County’s 24/7 Mental Health Crisis Line at (705)-728-5044 or Talk4Healing at 1-855-554-HEAL or the Metis Nation of Ontario's Mental Health and Addictions line at 1-877-767-7572
The Indigenous Peoples Court committee will assure confidentiality of your identity and responses by the following:
· Those who will have access to your completed surveys are required to follow policies and procedures in place in terms of confidentiality bound to their organizations
· Completed surveys will remain anonymous unless otherwise chosen by the person completing the survey
Your participation in this community consultation survey is completely voluntary. Should you choose to leave your information, you will be entered into a draw for a chance to win a gift card. You may choose to withdraw at any given time. Proceeding with the community consultation survey, you are agreeing to the above. The Committee recognizes that in typical times, a project such as this would have many in person community consultation meetings. To keep our communities safe, it was decided that using a survey is the best way to guarantee protection for our most vulnerable. Definition of terms:
Indigenous peoples: For the purpose of this community consultation survey, Indigenous peoples is referring to anyone who self-identifies as First Nations, Métis or Inuit regardless of legal definitions
Indigenous Peoples Court: For the purpose of this community consultation survey, Indigenous Peoples Court is referring to a Criminal Court that deals specifically with Indigenous peoples and their matters (also commonly known as Gladue Court)
