Building An Inclusive Future
Barrier-Free Manitoba (BFM) has worked since 2008 as a non-partisan, non-profit, cross-disability initiative to achieve one landmark goal: to secure strong and effective provincial accessibility-rights legislation. While this is not a 'done deal' quite yet, we expect this game changing legislation will have been passed and proclaimed by the end of June 2013.
The campaign to secure this legislation was built on the shoulders of giants - the efforts of a great many over past years. The campaign was successful because it managed to engage the largest coalition of groups and individuals from the disability sector in Manitoba history. It has been a remarkable journey.
Once in place, the new legislation will provide a powerful new tool to advance the human rights of persons with disabilities. The legislation holds the promise of achieving the long held vision of a truly inclusive Manitoba where all, regardless of ability, are able to equitably participate in their communities and the broader society.
A gigantic question that BFM is considering is "What needs to comes next?" to ensure that this promise is realized.
