iGEM envisages a future where synthetic biology, and all the power this technology holds, is developed everywhere by everyone. iGEM also believes that good biological engineering is safe, secure, and responsible. We’re working with our community to understand how to unite these two visions: as synthetic biology develops, what kind of future do we want to create? Do other people want this future as well?
For the first time, iGEM is convening a responsibility conference to bring together international organisations, leading thinkers, and key practitioners, in parallel with the 2022 Grand Jamboree. The virtual workshops are designed for the people who can not attend Jamboree in person. The virtual workshops have three sessions:
- 26 October, Wednesday, 8am - 9 am UTC: Safe, Secure, & Responsible Synthetic Biology Beyond Containment
- 26 October, Wednesday, 1 pm - 2 pm UTC: Negotiating competing ideas of doing good
- 27 October, Wednesday, 1 pm - 2:20 pm UTC: Lessons for governance of emerging technologies
There will be other related events hosted by iGEM responsibility program for teams:
- 26 October, Wednesday, 7am - 7:45 am UTC: Shape Global Policy With the iGEM Delegates Program
- 27 October, Thursday, 8 am - 9 am UTC: Level Up Your Human Practices!
