Dear Parents and Guardians:

The Biddeford School Department, like most others across the country, is preparing several different back-to-school options.  Our priority is the safety and welfare of our students and staff, and we have been working tirelessly with health experts to develop plans to welcome students back with a risk reduction strategy in mind.  The science shows--and Biddeford parent surveys affirm--the value of face coverings and social distancing to help lessen transmission risk.

The Biddeford School Department affirms the Governor’s assessment that a return-to-school is important for our children and families. Your input is crucial and will help us better understand your family’s needs, worries, and plans for the fall.  We are developing a plan to return using a “hybrid” model of in-person and remote instruction, depending on age.  I wish to stress: this is only a plan so we can be better prepared on July 31st when the State of Maine identifies York County’s risk as red, yellow, or green. At that time, our School Committee and Leadership Team will use the data to provide the safest environment for students and staff.

Guidance from the Maine CDC and Governor Mills was released last week with some important safety measures which will be observed and enforced regardless of which model we adopt:
  • Students and staff members must conduct self-checks for symptoms prior to boarding buses or entering school buildings each day.
  • Any person showing symptoms must report their symptoms and must not be present at school.
  • Adults and students age two and above are required to wear a mask/face covering that covers their nose and mouth, including on the bus. Face shields may be an alternative for those with medical or other health reasons.
  • Adults must maintain 6 feet of distance from others to the extent possible.  Maintaining 3 feet distance is acceptable among students when combined with other safety requirements. Six feet of distance is required while students are eating or masks removed.
  • All students and staff must wash their hands or use sanitizing gel upon entering the school, before and after eating, before and after donning and removing a face mask, after using the restroom, before and after use of playgrounds and shared equipment, and upon entering and exiting a school bus.
  • Sick staff members and students must use home isolation until they meet the criteria for returning to school.
  • For the full Framework released by Governor Mills, visit the Maine Department of Education website here.
We ask that you complete the survey for EACH CHILD you have attending Biddeford Schools.

Thank you,
Jeremy Ray
Superintendent of Schools
