Annual Election Process: HSMP Co-Chair & HSMP Vice Chair

Thank you for your participation in the voting process for the positions of Healthy St. Mary's Partnership Co-Chair and Vice Chair. When voting please keep in mind the candidates' biographies below. The deadline for voting is 5:00 p.m. on November 22, 2019. All elected officers will be contacted by the HSMP coordinator to confirm acceptance of their position. 
 
As per the bylaws, voting for action team co-chairs will take place at the following team meetings, you must be present to vote:
  • Healthy Eating & Active Living Action Team: Wednesday, December 4, 2019 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at Health Connections, MedStar St. Mary's Hospital
  • Tobacco Free Living Action Team: Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 10:45 - 11:45 a.m. at East Run Medical Center
  • Access to Care Action Team: Tuesday, December 10, 2019 from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Health Connections, MedStar St. Mary's Hospital
  • Behavioral Health Action Team: Friday, December 13, 2019 from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. at the St. Mary's County Health Department
The 2020 HSMP Steering Committee members will be announced in December.
HSMP Co-Chair Candidates

Lori Werrell headshot
Lori Werrell, MPH, MCHES
is the Regional Director of Population and Community Health for MedStar St Mary’s Hospital (MSMH) and MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center (MSMHC). She assumed this expanded role in July of 2019, previously serving as the Director of Population and Community Health for MSMH since Oct 2010. Lori has worked for MSMH in various roles since 1998. Throughout her career in healthcare, Lori has had the opportunity to be part of many grant funded community health improvement initiatives, serving as the program director of the Greater Lexington Park Health Enterprise Zone (2013-2017), and currently serving as the Co-Principal Investigator for the PreventionLink program. Lori has co-chaired the Access to Care team of the Healthy St Mary’s Partnership for the past few years. Lori serves on the Board of Directors of Health Share of St Mary’s County and the Maryland Rural Health Association. Lori is also a member of the Leonardtown Rotary.

Nat Scoggins headshot
Nathaniel Scroggins
retired from the US Navy with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer and selected St. Mary’s County as his home. Mr. Scroggins accepted employment with DynCorp International in Patuxent River, Maryland and in 2001 transferred within DynCorp International to Joint Base Andrews Air Force Base in Camp Springs Maryland before eventually retiring in April 2015. He is currently the Minority Outreach and Technical Assistance (MOTA) representative for the Department of Mental Health and Health Disparities (MHHD) and the Director for the Minority Outreach Coalition of St. Mary’s County, Inc. a 501C3 organization providing workshops, seminars and health education to St. Mary’s County and its minority population. 

Sue Veith Headshot
Sue Veith has an undergraduate degree in architecture and spent 7 years working as an intern architect in the private sector, followed by 16 years as a project designer and project manager working for the University of Virginia and UVA Hospital. Sue received her master’s degree in urban and environmental planning from UVA and began employment in 1994 in the St. Mary’s County Department of Land Use and Growth Management where she has worked on environmental policy and program implementation and development of comprehensive and functional plans. In 2016, Sue went to work for the St. Mary’s County’s Department of Economic Development on land preservation and efforts to promote improved quality of life in the county. Sue has volunteered as a member of the County Employee Wellness Committee. She has served as co-chair of the Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) action team for the past 4 years where she has worked on developing bike routes, neighborhood walking maps, laying groundwork for creation of community gardens and local food bank resources.

Greg Reuss Headshot
Greg Reuss, a Licensed Master Social Worker, is a Board Member of the Maryland Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. He has been an active member of the Healthy St. Mary’s Partnership (HSMP) Behavioral Health Action Team for over three years; and, currently serves as the HSMP Vice-Chair. Mr. Reuss is a retired Marine, having served 30 years in a combination of operational and staff assignments. He then worked in the defense industry for approximately 10 years. Mr. Reuss is recognized as a senior management professional with extensive leadership, operations research and analytic experience.

Mike Brown Headshot
Michael Brown is a retired Maryland Natural Resources Police Officer. He has resided in St. Mary's County for almost 40 years. Mr. Brown currently serves as the President of the Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions and serves as the Juneteenth Committee Chairperson while also sitting on the Board of Directors. He also sits on the Board of Directors of the St. Mary's County Arts Council as the Immediate Past President. He is a certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist through the Mayo Clinic. He contracts with the St. Mary's County Health Department to teach smoking cessation classes in St. Mary's County. Mike is currently a Co-Chair of the Tobacco Free Living Action Team of the Healthy St. Mary's Partnership.

Michael Watson headshot
Michael Watson has been in public education for nineteen years. He has served as a teacher, coach, vice principal, and principal in Calvert County Public Schools. In 2015, he move to St. Mary's County where he served as principal at Leonardtown High School. He moved to central office in 2017 where he served as the Administrative Accountability Officer as a principal supervisor. He is currently the Director of Facility Coordination, Health and Physical Education, and Athletics for St. Mary’s County Public Schools.
Stephen Michaels headshot
Stephen T. Michaels, MD, is the chief operating and medical officer for MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital with direct responsibility for and oversight of the hospital’s day-to-day operations, as well as providing a comprehensive clinical vision and medical direction to ensure delivery of the highest quality healthcare services. Prior to joining MedStar Health, Dr. Michaels practiced orthopedic surgery in suburban Maryland. He has held many leadership roles on medical staffs, administrative, regulatory and peer review committees, as well as community advisory panels on health care. Dr. Michaels holds a medical degree from Georgetown University, and completed his residency in Orthopeadic Surgery at SUNY-Stony Brook University Hospital in New York and a spine fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He is a published researcher, board certified in Orthopaedic surgery and a member of the American Academy of Orthopeadic Surgeons, among numerous other professional organizations.

This recognition led her to a master’s degree in urban and environmental planning from UVA and employment in 1994 in the St. Mary’s County Department of Land Use and Growth Management where she has worked on environmental policy and program implementation and development of comprehensive and functional plans. In 2016 Sue went to work for St. Mary’s County’s Department of Economic Development on land preservation and efforts to promote improved quality of life in the county. Sue has volunteered as a member of the County Employee Wellness Committee.
