The Semillas Mentored Grantsmanship Program is a professional development activity  open to faculty and staff at Certified Hispanic Serving Institution who are preparing new or revised Track 1 or Track 2 proposals.

Semillas is an activity of the NSF HSI National STEM Resource Hub that is offered in a partnership with the NIH National Research Mentoring Network with the long term goal of enhancing  STEM student success at HSIs through NSF funded projects. 


 
PROGRAM OVERVIEW

BENEFITS
Applicants who are accepted will participate in mentored grantsmanship training experience and are eligible to apply for an individual Semillas Professional Development Minigrant (max $5000).

MENTORED GRANTSMANSHIP EXPERIENCE.
  • The program is an intensive mentored activity for a small group of HSI faculty/staff.  The program convenes every 1 to 2 weeks between March 1, 2022 and July 31, 2022.
  • Participants must commit to full participation through attendance at meetings and completion of all assignments. Multiple absences or lack of assignment completion will result in withdrawal from the program. 
  • Successful applicants will apply and participate in the January 2022 Two day Jumpstart Virtual Workshop to be held on January 8th, 2022 and January 15th, 2022
  • Applicants will be notified of their application by December 5, 2021.

ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for participation, applicants must
  1. provide Proof of HSI Certified Institution status (https://nsf.gov/ehr/HSIProgramPlan.jsp)
  2. confirm they are STEM faculty/staff employed fulltime at a Hispanic Serving Institutions. 
  3. Faculty/staff at NMSU, CSUN and DACC are not eligible to apply.
SELECTION
Award priority is for projects that meet the following criteria:
  • New/junior investigators within the first 10 years of their academic appointments.
  • New applications not previously summited for review to the NSF HSI Initiative.
  • Applicants from HSIs that have received less than $5,000,000 in NSF funding since January 2016.
  • Applicants from HSIs that do not have a current Track 2 award.
  • Applicants from HSIs that have dual status as HSI/HBCU or HSI/Tribal College or AANAPISI.
  • Applicants who will serve as the Lead PI.

Expectations of Semillas3 Cohort Participants 
  • Attend all scheduled grant writing sessions
  • Meet all weekly deadlines for submission of grant writing assignments
  • Produce a complete draft of grant proposal for the IUSE: HSI Solicitation August 2022 deadline (NSF 20-599) upon completion of the program.
