The High Performance Computing (HPC) working group of the Astronomy Australia Limited (AAL) Science Advisory Committee (ASAC) is undertaking a survey of past, present, and future HPC usage by the Australian astronomical community. This crucial information will help ASAC assess the community’s future astronomical HPC and high performance data (HPD) needs, and will impact how ASAC advises AAL accordingly. The results will also inform directly the mid-term review of the Decadal Plan.

This survey aims to capture accurately the diversity of our community’s HPC/HPD usage, and so it encompasses both the end users whose research programmes depend on data processed on HPC facilities, and the traditional users that work directly on HPC/HPD facilities to carry out e.g. theoretical simulations or processing of observational data.

If this reflects your research programme, we ask you to complete this short survey by COB on Friday, May 3rd.

We look forward to your responses!

Question Title

* 1. Could you please indicate your research area(s) (you could choose more than one research area)?

Question Title

* 2. This question refers to the HPC outputs of others (either your collaborators or the community). How heavily do you rely on the HPC outputs of others for your research?

Question Title

* 3. This question refers to your own personal HPC usage.  Could you please indicate your current HPC usage (e.g. CPU/GPU hours)?

Question Title

* 4. What sort of HPC architecture suits your research best? If a mixture, please estimate how much of each.

Question Title

* 5. This question refers to your own personal HPC usage. Where do your current HPC resources come from? If a mixture, please estimate how much of each.

Question Title

* 6. This question refers to your own personal HPC usage. What is your desired HPC usage for the next 5 years (e.g. CPU/GPU hours)?

Question Title

* 7. This question refers to your own personal HPC usage. Where do you prefer to obtain your HPC resources for the next 5 years? If a mixture, please estimate how much of each.
