Humans have drifted through the skies by hot air balloons for centuries. To this day, hot air balloons still serve as one of our most peaceful and iconic modes of transportation.

Currently, there are over 50 transportation-related emojis available for use on electronic devices across the world – and yet, the hot air balloon is not among them. We believe it’s time for that to change.

The Unicode Consortium is the global entity that reviews and approves emojis for use on electronical devices throughout the world. A hot air balloon emoji has been pending review by the Unicode Consortium since January 2020. While we are encouraged to see the prospect of a hot air balloon emoji possibly become reality, we believe it’s time to provide the Unicode Consortium with a little bit of positive encouragement to show that the world needs the hot air balloon emoji.

Why does the world need the hot air balloon emoji?

A worldwide activity. There are hundreds of commercial balloon ride operators and thousands of independent owners and operators of hot air balloons just in the U.S. It is reasonable to believe that hundreds of thousands of passengers across the world will take to the skies in a hot air balloon each year.

An uplifting idea. Beyond the literal activity of ballooning, the hot air balloon emoji can evoke uplifting feelings of positivity, encouragement and optimism.

Truly unique and extraordinary. The lack of the hot air balloon emoji is even more perplexing when you consider the following exists:
  • cruise ships (X3)
  • trains and cable cars (X11)
  • commercial airplane (X3)
  • UFO (speculative they exist?)
Simply put, the red party balloon isn’t going to cut it any longer. Will you add your name to our petition to bring the hot air balloon emoji to the world?
