Welcome to a survey by Madalin Yeo-Ellis from the University of Adelaide

PROJECT TITLE: Examining common components of the diet of racing Greyhounds in South Australia

HUMAN RESEARCH ETHICS COMMITTEE APPROVAL NUMBER: H-2017-169

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Dr. Jane McNicholl

STUDENT RESEARCHER: Madalin Yeo-Ellis

STUDENT’S DEGREE: Bachelor of Veterinary Bioscience

Dear Participant,

You are invited to participate in the research project described below.

What is the project about?

The aim of this research project is to investigate the diets of racing greyhounds in South Australia. Insight into the different types of diets that these animals are commonly fed, will provide more information about the racing industry. This project hopes to uncover if there are any major gaps between the animal’s nutrition and their metabolic demand. To fulfil this research, we are hoping to gain some information from breeders, trainers and greyhound owners, regarding their feeding regimes.

Who is undertaking the project?

This project is being conducted by Madalin Yeo-Ellis, a 4th year veterinary science student at the University of Adelaide. This research will contribute to the Clinical Research Project course, which is a requirement as part of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine post-graduate degree, based at the Roseworthy college.

All research will be performed under the supervision of Dr Jane McNicholl from the University of Adelaide.

Why am I being invited to participate?

You are being asked to participate in this research study, as you are known to be either a greyhound owner, breeder or trainer. Therefore, your insight and knowledge about greyhounds is vital to our research.

What will I be asked to do?

If you agree to participate in the study, you will be asked to complete a short questionnaire, which can be provided to you either in the mail or via email. This questionnaire will provide us with information about greyhound diets.

How much time will the project take?

The questionnaire should take a maximum of 30 minutes or shorter than this time, depending on how in depth some of the questions are answered. This will be a one off survey and no more time will be required of you.

What are the benefits of the research project?

The positive benefits of this research would be to gain more information about the types of diets that greyhounds are commonly fed in the racing industry. This research may be able to provide more insight into aspects of greyhound diets that are meeting and not meeting the needs of the animal. It is the researcher’s hopes that this research will lead to better diets being formulated for greyhounds and giving trainers and breeders more information on the best diets for their animals.

If I want to participate, what do I do?

If you do not wish to participate in this study, you may simply delete this email. However, if you would be willing to participate in the study, you will be asked to complete either an online consent form and survey or a hardcopy survey which would be posted to you or completed in person. If you would prefer to do a postal survey, we will be able to send you the survey via postal mail which will include a return paid envelope to send the survey back in.

Yours sincerely,

Madalin Yeo-Ellis and Dr Jane McNicholl
