Welcome to the Grandfamilies & Kinship University Application

The Grandfamilies & Kinship University (GKU) is a two-year national leadership and community impact program developed by Generations United. We support grandparents, relatives, and close family friends who are raising children and want to grow as leaders in their communities. Through training, learning alongside fellow caregivers, and completing a community project, participants strengthen their voice and expand support for kinship families everywhere.

A few things to know before you begin:
  • This application takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete
  • For two questions, you may type your answer or record a short video (2 to 3 minutes). The video option is there if it feels more comfortable for you, but it is completely optional. Most people will simply type their answers and that is perfectly fine
  • All applications are reviewed carefully and with respect for each person's unique experience
  • The deadline to submit your completed application is Monday, June 8, 2026

*You can change your answers at any point during the application before you submit or exit it. Once you complete and submit the application, you will no longer be able to make changes.

Video submission instructions

Would you rather record a short video instead of typing your answers? You can do that! The two questions you can answer by video are:

1. Why are you interested in participating in the Grandfamilies & Kinship University?

2. What kind of community project might interest you?

Simply open the camera app on your phone, record your response (2 to 3 minutes total is fine), and email the video to kgillespie@gu.org. Write your first and last name in the subject line.

Video responses must be received by June 8th for your application to be considered complete.

Need help? Ask a family member or call us at 202-777-0108 and we will walk you through it. Important: Even if you submit a video, you must still complete all other sections of this application.
