PROJECT TITLE:                             An Exploration of Internet Trolling
PRINCIPAL RESEARCHER:            Dr Evita March, Federation University Australia
OTHER RESEARCHERS:                Natalie Sest, PhD Student

Dear Participant,

My name is Natalie Sest and I am a PhD Candidate working on this project as part of my PhD. This project is being overseen by Dr. Evita March, the principal researcher.

You are invited to participate in a questionnaire designed to examine Internet trolling. The purpose of this study is to understand the behaviours associated with trolling. Participants are reminded that they are not obliged to answer questions if they are uncomfortable. You are also advised that participation is entirely voluntary, and you may withdraw your participation at any time without penalty.

Please take the time to complete the following questionnaire, which will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. Please note that you must be aged 16 years and over to participate in this project. The survey will first ask you to provide some brief demographic information. Then the questionnaire will ask you questions regarding Internet trolling.
Your participation in this project is voluntary and your answers are anonymous. Participants are free to refuse consent or may withdraw their participation at any time without explanation. Please note, however, that each time you click the ‘next’ button throughout the questionnaire, your answers are immediately submitted and become amalgamated with the data. Therefore, should you decide to withdraw your participation throughout the questionnaire, there will be no way to retrieve your already submitted answers from the non-identifiable data.

Please note that de-identified data has the potential to be used in future research projects, but no individual will ever be able to be identified. All data collected as part of this project will be stored on password protected university devices. Only project researchers will have access to data. Data will be stored for a minimum of 5 years, after which the data will be permanently deleted.

The current research will extend previous research on online antisocial behaviour, therefore the information gathered and the results may be published in either journal or conference form. Results will also be published in the candidate’s dissertation. Any results will be published in an aggregated form that would not identify any participant.
There are no expected physical risks when completing this questionnaire, however, some questions may be of a personal nature and may cause some emotional discomfort. Should you experience any emotional discomfort when completing this questionnaire, you may discontinue your participation at any time.

Additionally, if you do experience emotional discomfort during the questionnaire, you are encouraged to contact Lifeline on PH: 13 11 14, or Kids Help Line on PH: 1800 551 800.
