The Marguerite Casey Foundation’s Equal Voice Journalism Fellowship and Scholarship Awards on Poverty aim to increase the public’s understanding of poverty. Recipients of either of the 2016 Equal Voice Awards will write at least one in-depth story or short series that illustrates how language, culture and race influence public attitudes and policy about poor people.

FELLOWSHIP:
An individual selected to receive a Fellowship from the Foundation will be required to sign an Award letter indicating his/her agreement to comply with the Foundation’s standard grant-making terms and conditions as a condition of receiving the Fellowship.

If an Applicant currently is employed or contracted by a news media company, the Award letter will require the Applicant to certify that he/she will work on the story or series to be funded by the Award on the Applicant’s own time (i.e., not during work hours) or will take an unpaid leave of absence from his/her assignment while working on the story or series funded by the Award.

Selected journalists will receive a stipend of $2,250, plus up to $1,000 in travel reimbursement.
 
SCHOLARSHIP:
College-enrolled student journalists may apply for the Equal Voice Scholarship, which offers a $500 award and up to $800 for travel reimbursement.

 Eligibility Criteria:
  • Individuals who have a familial relationship to any director or officer of the Marguerite Casey Foundation or to any member of the Foundation’s Advocacy and Communications Committee, are not eligible to receive a Fellowship from the Foundation.
  • To be considered for the Fellowship, an awardee's publisher or producer must agree to publish/air the awardee's content.
Deadline for publication or broadcast: Awardee content must be completed and published or aired no later than November 11, 2016.
