Classroom Speakers: WPAFB volunteers can speak to your classroom about a variety of topics, including life in the Air Force or Space Force, and career experiences.

FIRST LEGO League Challenge: FIRST LEGO League Challenge combines engineering, computer programming, problem-solving, researching, presenting and collaborating into an intense 8-week period. Teams of 2 to 10 children, ages 9 – 14 (US/CAN), learn science and technology skills and valuable employment and life skills at the same time.

FIRST Tech Challenge: FIRST Tech Challenge teams of up to 15 team members, in grades 7-12 are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, connecting with their communities, innovation, and working as a team.

Job Shadow Day: Every Fall and Spring, the STEM Outreach Office sponsors a job shadow day for High School Juniors and Seniors that allows them to learn, first-hand, about some of the many exciting careers available at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

LEGACY: The LEGACY project is three phases designed for students from age 11 to completion of their bachelor's degree. LEGACY is intended to introduce STEM at a young age, continue growing students' interest in STEM, and eventually hire these students into a STEM-driven Air Force career.

Mentors: WPAFB volunteers can assist students with specific STEM projects. For example: Science Fair projects, Independent Immersion projects, etc. Mentoring can be in-person at the school, or simply through email.

SEMEDS (Scanning Electron Microscope EDucatorS): This is a unique opportunity that brings local students and their teachers to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to operate state-of-the-art scanning electron microscopes in a real-life laboratory setting. This motivating event is conducted by volunteers from across WPAFB and is sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory Materials and Manufacturing Directorate. SEMEDS is a two-hour after school trip for high school and middle school students. Each session can accommodate 18 students and up to two sessions are offered each month.

Science Fair Judges: Many scientists, engineers and other professionals from WPAFB volunteer their time to judge projects at local science fairs. It’s a wonderful way to help groom the technical workforce we need for the future and to let your students interact with professionals who work in the kind of careers they may be interested in.

STARBASE: DoD STARBASE is a unique project that creates a bridge between DoD and civilian communities while providing local students with access to expertise in STEM outreach and career fields. STARBASE Wright-Patt is focused primarily on 5th graders that provides 25 hours of engaging STEM instruction. DoD STARBASE also includes an Advanced after-school element for middle school students to motivate them to explore STEM curriculum as part of their education.

STEM Night Support: WPAFB volunteers can support your school STEM Night events with fun, educational, and interactive activities and displays.

Tutors: The WPAFB STEM Outreach Office understands that some students require more individual help than others. Teachers or other school personnel can request volunteers to come to their school during school hours to tutor students.

WOW! (Wizards of Wright): WOW! is a Wright-Patterson Air Force Base K-12 STEM Outreach Project that provides resources for classroom teachers. We can schedule you to have a WPAFB volunteer come to your classroom with one of our STEM lessons or allow you to borrow materials to use for your own teaching. WOW! Teacher Workshops: The STEM Outreach office and our WOW! project offer free workshops for teachers during the school year, and over the summer. Topics include using our resources, and other STEM ideas, in your classroom.
