Volunteering at Auckland Zoo gives you a unique opportunity to share your interest in wildlife and conservation with zoo visitors. You will meet and work with a wide range of people, and gain an insight into the Zoo's conservation and educational focus.

Enrichment is used in zoos as a way of enhancing the environment an animal lives in. It's anything we do here at Auckland Zoo to encourage and stimulate natural behaviours in our animals. We give enrichment to our animals in many different ways to encourage them to investigate and interact with their environment. Providing enrichment alleviates boredom and gives our animals more choice on how they use their environment.

As a Primate Enrichment Volunteer you will be providing invaluable assistance to the keepers by assisting with the preparation of quality enrichments and directly contributing to the welfare of our animals’ lives. But this volunteer role is not for everyone! Standing all day, repetitive tasks, tying knots, stuffing boxes, and smearing fruit may not be everyone’s ideal volunteer role!

It is important to realise that animal interaction is not part of this role, though now and again you may be given the opportunity to watch the animals with their enrichments.
