During the spike in energy pricing experienced over the last eighteen months, focus has been tightened on energy costs within a business. Whilst the volatility did not allow for much mitigation, the recent calming in the energy markets have enabled us to finally make some headway on the contract pricing for gas and electricity. We have been speaking to a number of suppliers and generators in the energy market to curate a wholesale energy basket for the health and fitness sector. This is traditionally a procurement strategy adopted by multi-site users who consume a large volume of energy. However, together with our partners, we are investigating a basket approach for our members for gas and electricity.

When you consider the different profiles, geographical locations and risk ratings across a portfolio of businesses, you can begin to understand how difficult this can be. However, having spoken at great length with industry leaders and operators we have understood just how important this work might prove to be.

Why does this matter / what is the purpose of this survey?

The purpose of this survey is to establish if there's a potential benefit and saving cost for ukactive members on their energy procurement, if members were to all commit to a sector wide energy basket. ukactive will be using this information as part of their ongoing energy and decarbonisation steering group to support our members to access the best possible pricing and expert support. See below from our partner, QuikSwitch™, for more details.

"By adopting a collaborative approach, we can pool all the usage from clubs looking to participate in the scheme, to leverage a significantly cheaper rate than that available on the open market. We have already rolled this out with another trade body and from a modest initial uptake (around 10% of their members) we have secured rates that have consistently beaten open-market pricing up to 20% depending on meter types. We have run a few test cases to demonstrate the benefits:
  • East of England Trust  - 11% savings over the next best market price and over 79 metric tonnes of CO2e avoided.
  • Nationwide Leisure Operator – 6% savings over the next best market price and 189 metric tonnes of CO2e avoided.
  • Franchise operation, Lincoln – 12% savings achieved over the next best market price and over 12 metric tonnes of CO2e avoided.

If you procure your energy through fixed-price contracts, all you need to do is complete the following survey and demonstrate your intent to participate in the group buying scheme. It does not matter if your contract is not due for renewal, we will collate all the information provided and use this to maximum effect."
