In 2010, Wisconsin adopted our current standards for English language arts (ELA). Currently, 43 of the 50 states use standards that are identical to or highly similar to Wisconsin’s Standards for ELA. Wisconsin’s current standards for ELA can be accessed online at https://dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/standards/pdf/ela-stds-app-a-revision.pdf.

Wisconsin’s Standards for ELA, which cover learning from 5K through grade 12, define what students should know and be able to do related to English language arts. The standards state end-of-year expectations and do not dictate instructional methods, instructional materials, or assessments. In Wisconsin, all academic standards serve as a model. Locally elected school boards adopt academic standards in each subject area to best serve their local community.

This survey is part of a  revision and review process that all Wisconsin academic standards regularly engage in. Your responses will be shared with the Standards Review Council, who may recommend revision to the State Superintendent. If the State Superintendent determines revisions are necessary, your responses will be further shared with a writing committee.

Additional considerations:
  • Please complete this survey only one time.
  • We will only consider feedback from Wisconsin.
  • This revision and review process includes only Wisconsin’s Standards for ELA (Wisconsin’s Standards for Literacy in All Subjects will be reviewed at a later time.)
  • Revisions to the standards for ELA will have an impact on statewide assessments (Forward and ACT). These changes would happen three to five years after the adoption of revised standards.
Open through August 30.
