Shade and Shade Tree Survey for Public Schools and Community Colleges

The Division of the State Architect (DSA) is gathering input on shade and shade trees at public school and community college sites. Your responses will help inform potential updates to shade requirements in the California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen).

This survey takes approximately 5 minutes to complete, or more if you choose to submit optional comments.

Terms used in this survey:
Shade: Relief from direct sun provided by tree canopy or by shade structures (for example, trees, canopies/awnings, solar photovoltaic, or shade structures).
Hardscape areas: Paved or hard-surfaced outdoor areas such as blacktops, playgrounds, courtyards, walkways, gathering areas, and similar spaces.

How shade is measured in CALGreen Code: Shade is measured when the sun is directly overhead in the summer and required tree shade is calculated at projected growth 15 years after planting.

The following questions should be answered accordingly:
If you are in District Administration or Facilities Development, your responses should reflect the campus in your district that has the least shade.
If you are in School Administration, Faculty, or Parent/Student/Stakeholder, your responses should reflect your campus. If you are a parent with students at multiple campuses, your responses should reflect the campus your child attends that has the least shade.
