Harray & Sandwick Community Council - Community Questionnaire

What are we asking and why?

The Harray & Sandwick Local Place Plan was developed through community engagement across the area. One of the issues raised through that work was the reduced availability of places in Dounby to meet, eat, drink and socialise, following the closure of the Smithfield Hotel's bar, restaurant and café.

The hotel continues to operate as visitor accommodation, but the wider facilities remain closed. With the property now on the market, Harray & Sandwick Community Council is undertaking a feasibility study to understand further whether there are community needs or opportunities that should be considered as part of thinking about its future.

No decision has been made about the future of the Smithfield Hotel from a community council perspective, but we have had open discussions with the owner in advance of this survey.

This questionnaire is not a proposal for community ownership, purchase or any particular use of the building. Its purpose is to gather evidence about what, if anything, people feel is needed and what they would realistically use.
