Pictured above is the Concept Plan, overlain on a 2023 aerial, for commercial development proposed at the southwest corner of Simmons Road and Justin Road (FM407). As shown in the aerial, a gas station is part of this proposal.
A 2019 Columbia University-Johns Hopkins study, showed that benzene and other compounds released to the air can pose a threat to the health of those living within 500 feet of a gas station. The red circle in the aerial above shows the possible 500-foot health impact zone of the gas station at the currently proposed location.
The Town of Double Oak has been asked to rezone the 23.4-acre area outlined with purple above to allow for a gas station and other commercial uses. However, once rezoning is granted the gas station could be relocated any where within the 23.4-acre site which may pose a threat to not just Fairlin and Garner neighborhood residents but those living in Carruth Estates, Cross Timbers, Estates of Double Oak, Lantana, and the Sunset Vista neighborhoods.
If you don't think this is right for our neighborhoods, then please add your name below to urge the Town of Double Oak Council to safeguard your health and that of your family by requiring a minimum 500-foot health protection zone between all proposed gas station site boundaries and residential property lines. As explained in the letter from our consultant, CEDS, which is posted at the following link, this measure will guide new gas stations to locations where the benefits can be gained without posing a threat to Double Oak residents: https://app.box.com/s/vwly7sv2mtivcooob4bm10ta5s4m58e9.
