DFCU Cares Scholarship

The Downey Federal Credit Union DFCU Cares Scholarship was established in 2023 to honor high school and college students who exemplify hard work, community service, and self-improvement. Interested students should be highly motivated, excel academically, and should be involved in and contribute to their community.

Scholarship Information:
This annual scholarship will be given in the amount of $1,000 to one current college student, and $1,000 to one high school Senior, selected through the application process and criteria listed below.
High School Applicant Requirements:
  • Student must reside in or attend high school in Bell, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Compton, East Compton, Cudahy, Downey, Huntington Park, Lynwood, Norwalk, Paramount, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, or South Gate
  • Applicants must be in their last year of high school (Senior)
  • Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in their current term and must submit transcripts verifying GPA
  • Student must be attending school full time
  • Student must fill out scholarship application completely to be considered for the scholarship
  • Must highlight any volunteer work
  • Any existing employees of Downey Federal Credit Union are not eligible to apply
  • All applicants must submit current high school transcripts to complete the application. Transcripts can be uploaded online or brought to the DFCU branch.
College Applicant Requirements:
  • Student must either have attended a high school in, currently reside in, or be enrolled in a college located in the cities we serve, be a current member of DFCU, or have a parent/guardian who is a current member of DFCU
    • DFCU's Field of Membership cities: Bell, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Compton, East Compton, Cudahy, Downey, Huntington Park, Lynwood, Norwalk, Paramount, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, and South Gate
  • Applicants must currently be enrolled in college or a vocational education program (eligible programs include: 2-year junior college, 4-year university, graduate programs, certificate programs, and trade school).
  • Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in their current term and must submit transcripts verifying GPA
  • Student must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 units
  • Student must fill out scholarship application completely to be considered for the scholarship
  • Must highlight volunteer work
  • Students who have previously won this scholarship are eligible to reapply
  • Any existing employees of Downey Federal Credit Union are not eligible to apply
  • All applicants must submit current college transcripts to complete the application. Unofficial transcripts are sufficient. Transcripts can be uploaded online or brought to the DFCU branch.

Friday, March 29th, 2024 at Midnight
Scholarship Application Process:
  • Additional documentation may be attached to the application including reference letters, recent awards, newspaper articles, or verification of community service.
  • After applications have been reviewed by our scholarship committee and eligibility has been verified, students may be invited to interview virtually with member(s) of our scholarship committee and must be available the weeks of April 5th - April 12th, 2024.
  • The selected scholarship recipients will be notified by April 30th, 2024, via phone/email, and the winner’s name may be posted publicly by DFCU.
