Informed Consent to Participate

The University and those conducting this project subscribe to the ethical conduct of research and to the protection at all times of the interests, comfort, and safety of participants. The following information is meant to ensure your protection and full understanding of this project’s procedures, and the risks and benefits it involves.

This consent form, a copy of which has been given to you, is only part of the process of informed consent. It explains what the research is about and what participation involves. If you would like more details, ask at any time. Please take the time to read this carefully and to understand any accompanying information.

> Its purpose is to determine what drives young people (18 to 30) to make the choice of whether to vote or not vote.
> The results of this research will be presented at conferences and published in a research report for Elections BC.
> I am being asked to participate in a survey which is to last no more than 20 minutes.
> I will be presented a series of questions that pertain to my voting behavior, as well as some that ask me for a small amount of personal information.
> It is unlikely there will be any discomfort associated with this project.
> There is no remuneration associated with this project and I will not incur any costs.
> I understand I can request an executive summary of the project’s results or receive updates on the project’s progress by contacting any of the principal investigators at the phone numbers/addresses above.
> I understand that I may refuse to participate or withdraw my participation in this project at any time without consequence. Partially completed surveys will not be included in the research project and will be destroyed and disposed of immediately.
> I understand that any information that I provide during this survey will be kept confidential and anonymous by the re  
searchers, in accordance with the principles of ethical research and the policies of Thompson Rivers University.
> I understand that aggregate data will be used as a part of this project.
> I understand the data collected will be stored in a locked filing cabinet in the researchers’ office and that all identifying in
formation will be removed and kept separate from the collected data.
> Only the researchers and their faculty supervisors will have access to this data.
> I understand that I may ask any questions or register any complaint I might have about the project with the principal
investigator named above or with Dr. Sandra Vermeulen, Associate Dean of Arts, Faculty of Arts, Thompson Rivers University, telephone: 250-371-5561, email: svermeulen@tru.ca.
