The Coronavirus pandemic has forced all of us to adapt to a new reality of social distancing. For kids, this reality can be especially hard. To help middle and high school students in Montana record this unprecedented time in their lives, the Montana Media Lab at the UM School of Journalism is launching a state-wide, oral history project. We're asking high school and middle school students across Montana to document their experiences by recording phone or Skype/Zoom interviews with grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers and friends they can't see in person right now due to social distancing.

Interested students must participate in a one-hour training via Zoom with the Montana Media Lab to learn audio interviewing techniques, how to record conversations via smartphone or computer and how to download and submit their conversations.

Our goal is to help students document these challenging times while giving them useful interviewing skills to keep telling stories in the future. All conversations will be archived on the Montana Media Lab website. We hope to package some conversations for broadcast on local and national public radio stations this spring as well.
